On August 6th, Hiroshima was the main target of the first atom bombing mission. The Enola Gay left the North Field, and in six hours arrived in Japan. They were accompanied by two other B-29 bombers. The Great Artiste that carried instrumentation, and then a nameless aircraft which then became “Necessary Evil”, was used as the photography aircraft. The bomb they used on Hiroshima was called the “Little Boy”.
On August 9th, a second bomb was deployed, with the primary target being Kokura and the secondary being Nagasaki. On their way to Kokura the Plane called the “Bockscar” experienced technical difficulties forcing the crew to decide on their secondary target, Nagasaki. There were approximately 75,000 people killed or maimed after the bombing.
